On September 3, 2019, Kakamega County Deputy Governor Philip Kutima officially launched a Sh23 million training centre for dairy farmers at Kabras County Polytechnic in Chevaywa ward, Lugari sub-county.

The Lugari Dairy Smart Farm is a 10-acre facility that will serve as a learning centre for local farmers and agriculture students at the polytechnic, focusing on best practices in the dairy value chain.

"We are investing in this project to equip students and farmers with knowledge in dairy farming to increase milk production in the county," said Deputy Governor Kutima.

The centre will also serve as a milk collection centre for farmers before delivery to Malava Dairy plant once the factory is operational.

Deputy Governor Kutima dismissed Senator Cleophas Malala's claims that the Malava Dairy plant had stalled, assuring that everything was on course.

"Government projects are not run like fast foods outlets," he said.

The county government plans to establish similar smart farms in all 12 sub-counties of Kakamega by December this year.
