On September 2, 2019, the courts delivered a significant blow to the ongoing power struggle within the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), reinstating Wilson Sossion as the union's Secretary-General.
Following his reinstatement, Sossion called on union officials to resume work, stating that he holds no grudge against those who instigated his illegal ouster.
Speaking at a press briefing at the KNUT headquarters, Sossion emphasized the need for unity and cooperation among union officials, urging them to put aside their differences for the sake of teachers and learners.
The reinstatement of Sossion comes after a prolonged legal battle, which saw him move to court to challenge the union's national executive council (NEC) decision to oust him.
Justice Helen Wasilwa granted Sossion temporary relief, reinstating him as Secretary-General and allowing him access to his office and the union's bank accounts pending the outcome of the case.
However, the NEC has also moved to court, seeking to bar Sossion from accessing the union's bank accounts. Both applications are set to be heard on September 3, 2019.
