Former Harambee Stars captain McDonald Mariga has confirmed his interest in becoming the next Member of Parliament for Kibra Constituency.

Mariga, a retired footballer who won the UEFA Champions League with Inter Milan, presented his papers to the Jubilee Party for consideration to run for the Kibra parliamentary seat.

Speaking to journalists, Mariga dismissed allegations that his entry to the race was prompted by a senior Jubilee politician.

“I have been a resident here. I have lived in Karanja so I know everything about this place. I just want to give back to the community…”, said Mariga.

Mariga has denied claims that Deputy President William Ruto and former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale approached him to run for the seat.

The Kibra seat has attracted several candidates from different parties, including Eliud Owalo, who was unveiled as the Amani National Congress (ANC) party’s candidate, and Eng. Khamisi Butichi, who will fly the Ford Kenya party’s flag.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party will hold its nominations on September 7, which will see 11 aspirants go head-to-head.
