On September 2, 2019, the Employment and Labour Relations Court in Nairobi delivered a significant ruling in the ongoing power struggle at the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT).
Wilson Sossion, the embattled secretary-general of KNUT, had filed a case against the union's National Executive Committee (NEC) for allegedly breaching a court order issued on August 29, 2019. The order had stopped the NEC from convening a meeting to remove Sossion from his position.
Justice Helen Wasilwa reinstated Sossion as the KNUT secretary-general, pending the hearing of the application to nullify the August 29 NEC meeting. The judge also allowed Sossion to access the union's offices at Knut House and the bank accounts.
However, the NEC, through lawyer Okongo Omogeni, is seeking orders to stop Sossion from continuing with service as KNUT secretary-general and to bar him from accessing the bank accounts. The two applications will be heard on September 3, 2019.
