On the opening weekend of the 2019/2020 Kenyan Premier League, several teams made a statement with impressive performances. Published on September 2, 2019, the matches saw Gor Mahia send an early statement of intent with a 5-2 drubbing of Tusker.
Among the standout performers was Bandari goalkeeper Michael Wanyika, who made a string of top-drawer saves to help his team pick a point from Mathare United in a 0-0 draw.
Wellington Ochieng, who had been sidelined for close to a year, seemed to have rediscovered his form, providing two assists against Tusker for Gor Mahia. On the left flank, Bolton Omwenga produced his trademark barnstorming displays as KCB won convincingly at Awendo.
At the heart of defence, Kennedy Owino capped a brilliant individual display with a towering header that inspired Western Stima's comeback against Kariobangi Sharks. Completing the back four was George Odiwuor, whose calming effect at the back helped Kakamega Homeboyz to a clean sheet in the 1-0 win over AFC Leopards.
The midfield trio of Boniface Muchiri, Roy Okal, and Kenneth Muguna impressed with their skills and stamina, with Muguna leading from the front with a brace as Gor began the season in style. Enosh Ochieng' started his Golden Boot 'defence' on a sound note, stinging newbies Kisumu AllStars twice.
