West Pokot County is making significant strides in promoting peace and stability along its borders. As part of this effort, three peace border schools are nearing completion and are set to open in January 2020.
The schools, located in Katikomor, Akulo, and Kanyerus, are expected to accommodate pupils from neighboring communities, including Pokot, Luhya, and Sebei from Uganda. The infrastructure at these schools is almost complete, with classrooms, dormitories, and administration blocks ready for use.
Speaking at Katikomor, Governor Prof. John Lonyangapuo expressed his satisfaction with the progress made so far. "Classrooms, dormitories, and administration blocks at the three schools are almost complete, ahead of January intake and I am impressed by the progress," he said.
The governor emphasized that the schools will not only promote peaceful coexistence among pupils but also boost border relations. He added that his government is committed to tackling insecurity head-on and ensuring the county and its neighbors are secure.
As part of this initiative, the county government has already purchased a 52-seater bus to transport pupils from far-flung areas. Plans are also underway to purchase uniforms for the pupils.
Residents of Katikomor have welcomed the project, citing its positive impact on their community. Joseph Ruto, a resident, thanked the county government for initiating the project, saying it has helped unite children from warring communities.
"This place where the school has been set up was a battle field for cattle rustlers. No child was able to go to school due to insecurity. We have already begun realising the importance of the education and coexistence," he said.
With the schools set to open in January 2020, the county government is calling on the national government and other well-wishers to support the project, which aims to bring peace and stability to the region.
