On Sunday, Deputy President William Ruto visited Kirinyaga County, where he faced opposition from Governor Anne Waiguru, who has been at odds with him over her recent comments supporting Raila Odinga's presidential bid.

Waiguru, a member of Ruto's Jubilee Party, had sparked controversy by saying that Mt. Kenya, a region largely associated with the party, would back Raila in 2022.

Speaking at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Kirinyaga County, Ruto said that Jubilee Party would not be swayed by opposition and would continue to pursue its agenda.

“Those beating drums on referendum, we want to tell them that we are focused and we know where we are going. No amount of intimidation and blackmail will stop us from fulfilling the agenda we promised Kenyans,’’ Ruto said.

He also took a swipe at Raila Odinga, saying that some people were being referred to as 'his excellency, his worship, right-honorable, Baba (father) and mama (mother) and he forgot that there is a living God in heaven and no one is powerful than him.”

Waiguru and her deputy, Peter Ndambiri, skipped Ruto's event, with the governor ordering MCAs to boycott the fundraiser. However, about 20 MCAs defied the order and attended the event.

Speaking during the fundraiser, the MCAs led by nominated ward rep Lucy Njeri said that they defied the governor's order to attend the Sacred Heart Kangaita Catholic Church fundraiser.
