Parliament has stepped in to address the impending Mau Forest evictions, which are set to displace over 60,000 people. The move comes as the government prepares to conduct the second round of evictions.
Environment Committee Chair Kareke Mbiuki has stated that the impending second round of evictions was not consultative, and that the Cabinet Secretary should have involved local leaders and those who will be affected.
According to Mbiuki, the Tobiko-led ministry has not provided information on the achievements of phase one evictions, which lasted for a month. The committee has invited Tobiko to appear before them next week to shed more light on the proposed phase II evictions.
Questions on the over 4,000 pupils affected following the move by the government to close 15 schools in Mau Forest are expected to top the agenda of the meeting.
