US-based Kenyan businessman George Kiongera has filed a lawsuit against Baringo Senator Gideon Moi and KANU Secretary General Nick Salat, alleging they orchestrated a fraudulent land sale in Muthaiga. The dispute centers on a 20-acre property linked to former President Daniel Moi, with Kiongera claiming he paid 500 million shillings for a plot entangled in multiple ownership claims.
Court records from 2005 show the land was excluded from Daniel Moi’s estates due to ongoing legal disputes. Despite this, KANU officials allegedly misrepresented its status. In 2015, Salat tasked an intermediary with finding a buyer, claiming the property belonged to the late president. A 2016 agreement saw Gideon Moi, lawyer Jinaro Kibet, and Salat accept Kiongera’s 25 million shillings per acre offer, totaling 500 million shillings.
Kiongera made a 100 million shilling down payment, but Salat later demanded an additional 30 million shillings, citing urgent financial needs. The businessman secured a loan from Chase Bank Kenya, which collapsed in 2018, forcing him to seek alternative funding. During site visits, Kiongera discovered conflicting ownership claims, including assertions by a farmer and security personnel that the land belonged to United States University.
Despite Gideon Moi’s denials, Kiongera sued USIU and later uncovered that the same property had been sold to Equity Bank CEO James Mwangi for 300 million shillings. A 2018 article referenced Salat’s involvement in the case, which remains unresolved in court.
