Absa Bank Kenya has committed Ksh56 million to become the official presenting partner of the 2022 Magical Kenya Open (MKO) golf tournament, now part of the DP World Tour. The sponsorship marks the 11th consecutive year the bank has supported the event, which will be held at Muthaiga Golf Club from March 3-6, 2022.
The tournament, first held in 1967, attracts over 150 golfers including eight Kenyan professionals and six amateurs. With a $2 million prize purse, it has grown into one of sub-Saharan Africa's premier sporting events. The 2022 edition will be the first on the European Tour to take place at Muthaiga, established in the 1920s.
Jeremy Awori, Absa Bank Kenya's managing director, highlighted the tournament's role in promoting Kenya as a global sports destination. "This partnership allows us to support local pros while showcasing Kenya's capacity to host international events," he said. The funding will cover player support and event promotion, with Awori praising organizers for maintaining high standards.
Kenya Open Golf Limited chairman Peter Kanyago noted Absa's consistent support since 2011, when the event was part of the Challenge Tour. "Their contribution has transformed the tournament into a major regional attraction," he stated. The 2021 title was won by South African Justin Harding at Karen Country Golf Club.
