Located off the coast of Tanzania, Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous island with a rich history and vibrant culture. The island boasts some of the world's most stunning coastlines, making it a popular destination for beach lovers.
However, before you embark on your Zanzibar adventure, there are several things to consider to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip.
1. Safety ¶
As a foreign visitor, safety is a top concern. Fortunately, Zanzibar is generally considered a safe and friendly island, with a low crime rate compared to other Eastern African countries.
2. Dress Code ¶
As the largest population in Zanzibar are Muslims, it's essential to respect their conservative dress code. While modest clothing is a must, the vibrant colours and African prints of traditional garments like kangas add a touch of cultural flair.
3. Food Variety ¶
Zanzibar's cuisine is a delicious blend of Arab, Portuguese, and Indian influences, with fresh seafood and exotic fruits being a staple. Be sure to try the local specialties, such as octopus curry and Zanzibar pizza, at the Forodhani Gardens Night Market or The Teahouse restaurant.
4. Commutability ¶
Getting around Zanzibar is relatively easy, with affordable options like dala dalas (tuk-tuks) and taxis available. Renting a car can also be a cost-effective option, allowing you to explore the island at your own pace.
5. Funds for Touring ¶
It's essential to have local currency, Tanzanian shillings, and US dollars on hand, as the only ATM on the island is located in Stone Town. Be prepared to pay a USD 50 entry fee upon arrival.
6. Disease Precautions ¶
Before traveling to Zanzibar, ensure you have a valid yellow fever certificate, acquired at least 10 days prior to your trip. Additionally, take precautions against malaria contraction, as the island falls within the malaria belt.
7. Best Time to Visit ¶
June and October are the ideal months to visit Zanzibar, with cool and dry weather. Avoid April, as heavy rains can disrupt your holiday plans.
