Manchester United's new signing Daniel James made a promising start to his career, scoring his third Premier League goal in four appearances with a fierce, rising right-foot drive after just 10 minutes.

However, Southampton's Jannik Vestergaard stole the show with a towering header, equalizing for the 10-man Saints just before the hour mark.

The goal capped a spell of pressure from Southampton, who had been growing in momentum in the second half as Manchester United's performance began to falter.

David de Gea had saved superbly from Danny Ings earlier in the game, and Vestergaard's equalizer proved the high point of Kevin Danso's afternoon, as he was later sent off for a crude lunge at James McTominay.

Manchester United laid siege to Southampton's goal in the closing stages, but keeper Angus Gunn saved superbly from Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood, while both Jesse Lingard and Ashley Young were just off target.

Despite the draw, Manchester United's performance was disappointing, with the team now having only one win from four league games.
