Africa's fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, shattered Kenya's 60-meter national record with a time of 6.63 seconds during his debut at the World Indoor Tour's Miramas Meeting in France on February 4, 2022.
Omanyala, who holds the African 100m record of 9.77 seconds, eclipsed the previous national benchmark of 6.70 seconds set by Paulvince Obuon in 2005 at State College, United States.
The performance also broke the stadium's 60m record previously held by Iranian athlete Hassan Taftian at 6.68 seconds. Omanyala described the experience as 'a great fun' and emphasized its value as preparatory training for the outdoor season.
"I take it as training as I build towards the outdoor season. My target now is to run 6.40 seconds before the World Indoor Championships. I have more races and six weeks to improve on the time," Omanyala stated.
The 24-year-old sprinter plans to compete in the Mondeville Meeting on February 9 and the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais in Paris on February 17. His upcoming targets include the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Belgrade (March 18-20) and the World Athletics Championships Oregon 2022 in Eugene, USA (July 15-24).
Omanyala previously finished second at the Kip Keino Classics in Kasarani Stadium on September 18, 2021.
