On August 31, 2019, the Jubilee party's National Election Board (NEB) confirmed that McDonald Mariga, a 32-year-old football star, was among the candidates vying for the party's ticket in the Kibra by-election.
According to lawyer Andrew Musangi, the Jubilee NEB chairperson, the party had received a list of 16 candidates by 5:30 pm on Friday, and interviews were underway to determine the party's flagbearer.
Mariga, who has previously played for Italian football giants Inter Milan and other clubs around the world, is currently without a club.
The clearance of Mariga comes days after the party's Secretary-General Raphael Tuju denied claims that the midfielder was among the party's candidates in the forthcoming Kibra mini poll.
The winner of the Jubilee party ticket will face aspirants from other political parties, including 11 candidates from the Orange Democratic Movement, which commands a strong support in Kibra constituency.
