On August 31, 2019, Serena Williams secured a three-set win over 17-year-old Caty McNally in the second round of the US Open, but her performance was marred by disappointment.
Williams' frustration seemed to carry over into her next match against Karolina Muchova, a 23-year-old ranked 44th. Muchova initially stayed close, but Williams took advantage of Muchova's struggles with her first serve to claim the break and take the set, 6-3.
Williams quickly asserted her dominance in the second set, winning the first three games and eventually breaking Muchova's serve to take a 5-2 lead. She lost only two more points the rest of the match and won, 6-3, 6-2.
Williams will face No. 22 seed Petra Martic in the fourth round on Sunday, after Martic defeated No. 12 Anastasija Sevastova, 6-4, 6-3.
