On August 30, 2019, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) issued a warrant of arrest against Joseph Mwangi Nduta, popularly known as Joe Mwangi, over allegations of forgery and threatening a gymnast's mother.

According to the DCI, Mwangi had forged a letter purported to have originated from a Cabinet Secretary, threatening Magdalene Mbele, the mother of gymnast Wendy Waeni.

Waeni had previously accused her former manager, Mwangi, of exploiting her talent for selfish gains, claiming that he did not share any of the money she earned from her performances with her mother.

Waeni, who has performed in various countries including Rwanda, Germany, and China, stated that she had not received any payment for her performances and that her mother was suffering as a result.

However, Mwangi denied the allegations, accusing Waeni's mother of embezzling the funds he sent to her and misleading her daughter.

Waeni's mother, Magdalene Mbele, denied the allegations, stating that Mwangi had taken almost everything from her daughter's earnings.

The DCI had promised to investigate the matter after members of the public condemned Mwangi for robbing the young girl of her sweat.
