On August 30, 2019, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) announced its commitment to supporting peace efforts in Kerio Valley. The commission emphasized the importance of homegrown solutions in achieving peace in the region.
According to NCIC communication officer Hassan Ismail, peace cannot be imported from outside and must be developed by bringing the people in the region together. Ismail stated that the peace building process is through dialogue and should be sustained.
As part of its efforts, the NCIC has initiated a peace programme aimed at bringing people together and prioritizing challenges to find ways of addressing them. A coordination centre has been set up in Marigat, Baringo county, to facilitate the peace building efforts.
Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos commended the counties for starting dialogue to address the conflict. He emphasized that meagre resources should not be pegged on the insecurity cases witnessed and that communities should be urged to be non-violent to achieve peace through cohesion.
The NCIC has pledged to support the counties in sustaining dialogue and eventually attaining the much-needed peace in the region.
