On August 30, 2019, the Ministry of ICT made a significant move towards spurring growth in Kenya's film industry by recommending a review of filming fees.
According to ICT Principal Secretary Jerome Ochieng, high costs of production and exploitative bureaucratic red tape have been major deterrents for entrepreneurs looking to venture into the creative sector.
Speaking at a gala organized by the Kenya Film Commission to reward best scriptwriters in a competition, Ochieng emphasized the need for a conducive environment that will empower budding Kenyan producers to invest in the multi-billion shillings industry.
Benjamin Odiwuor emerged victorious in the National Script Writing Competition, taking home 1 million shillings for his script 'Dust In My Eyes.'
The competition, which attracted a pool of 500 scriptwriters, aimed to tap talent in the creative industry and market best scripts abroad.
The Ministry of ICT hopes that with affordable filming fees, the film industry will experience significant growth, creating employment opportunities for thousands of Kenyans.
