Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) chief executive Jonny Anderson has shocked the aviation industry with his resignation, effective September 30, 2019. In a memo to staff, Anderson cited 'personal reasons' for his decision to step down before the expiry of his term in November.

Anderson's tenure at KAA, which began in July 2016, has been marked by controversy. He was appointed after a protracted recruitment process that was marred by claims of political interference. Anderson trounced five other candidates, including Yatich Kangugo, who emerged a distant fifth in the interviews.

During his time at KAA, Anderson has overseen a period of growth in passenger numbers and the number of airlines flying to Kenya. However, his leadership has also been criticized, particularly over the cancellation of the Sh64.5 billion Greenfield terminal project at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Anderson's resignation comes after a warning from the National Assembly's Public Investments Committee (PIC) that it would declare him and other KAA management officials hostile witnesses if they failed to provide documents justifying the cancellation of the Greenfield terminal project.

Anderson will proceed on leave on September 30, with his tenure ending on November 21, 2019. He has expressed gratitude to his colleagues and the incredible journey he has shared with them.

KAA chairman Isaack Awuondo has confirmed Anderson's exit, crediting him for strengthening airport operations during his tenure.
