Manchester United defender Chris Smalling is on the verge of a season-long loan move to Serie A side Roma, with the Premier League club reportedly agreeing a £2.7m fee.

According to Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Smalling has travelled to Italy to finalise the deal, which is expected to be completed soon.

Smalling, 29, has been with Manchester United since 2010, when he joined from Fulham, and extended his contract at Old Trafford to 2022 in December.

However, the England international has found himself on the fringes of the squad, with fellow centre-backs Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof established as the first-choice partnership.

Solskjaer has also confirmed that Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, and Axel Tuanzebe will remain at the club, despite being linked with other teams.
