On August 30, 2019, police in Nyali, Mombasa County, engaged in a shootout with a notorious armed robber, Mohamed Hamasa, alias Moha, at Bombolulu Sports area.

According to Nyali police boss, Simon Thirikwa, the officers had gone to raid the suspect's house and ordered Hamasa to surrender, but he declined to cooperate.

Instead, Hamasa hurled a grenade at the officers, prompting them to open fire and kill the suspect instantly.

During the raid, the police recovered various materials, including police uniform, boots, and two smartphones, which are believed to have been used in making an improvised explosive device.

Hamasa was reportedly a member of a gang that shot an M-Pesa agent at a Naivas store in Nyali on June 25, 2019, and made away with Ksh 600,000.

The suspect's body was taken to Coast Provincial General Hospital morgue for post-mortem.

Thirikwa further disclosed that Hamasa had been in the past charged with various criminal offences and had stayed in Bombolulu for about 20 years.
