On Thursday, Uganda confirmed a new Ebola case in Kasese District, with a nine-year-old girl testing positive for the virus.

The Ministry of Health identified the patient during screening as she attempted to cross the border on Wednesday, seeking medical care in Bwera, Kasese District.

According to the Ministry of Health, the girl and her mother entered the country through Mpondwe main border post, where she was identified by the screening team with symptoms including high fever, body weakness, rash, and unexplained mouth bleeding.

Her blood sample tested positive for the Ebola virus at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI).

Dr. Joyce Moriku, the State Minister for Health in charge of Primary Health Care, stated that since the child was identified at the point of entry, there are no contacts in Uganda.

This case marks the second Ebola outbreak in Uganda, following the first in June, which claimed two lives after individuals traveled from Congo.

The haemorrhagic disease has killed at least 1,800 people in a year-long outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
