On August 30, 2019, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) launched a crackdown on the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Athi River, Kenya.
According to Acting CEO George Makateto, the manner in which NEMA officials were carrying out the exercise would scare away investors and put over 25,000 jobs at risk.
NEMA board chairman John Konchella and other top officers had threatened to arrest senior EPZ officers over claims the zone was diverting waste into River Athi.
The board also issued a one-month notice to EPZA to de-commission an open solid dumpsite in their premises.
