On August 6, 2019, the Kenyan boxing team was in high spirits during a training session at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani in Nairobi.
Fast forward to the 2019 African Games in Rabat, Morocco, where Kenya's national flyweight champion Shaffi Hassan Bakari secured a silver medal after winning his semi-final against Wibshet Dawit Bekele on a split 4-1 points' decision.
Bakari's victory set him up for a potential gold medal in the flyweight (52kg) finals against Mohammed Rajab Otukile of Botswana, who had edged out Algerian Mohammed Flissi in another semi-final.
However, Kenya's boxers also secured bronze medals in various weight categories. Heavyweight Elly Ajowi and superheavyweight Fred Ramogi dropped out of the semi-finals but secured their bronze medals by virtue of being knocked out in their respective matches.
Welterweight Maina Boniface Mogunde, middleweight Ouma George Cosby, and superheavyweight Otieno Fredrick Ramogi also bagged bronze medals after losing in the semi-finals.
Out of the four female boxers selected by the Boxing Federation of Kenya, none managed to reach the knockout stages.
