On August 26, 2019, Albert Nabonibo, a 35-year-old Rwandan gospel singer, made history by becoming the first gospel singer in Rwanda to come out as gay.
Nabonibo, born in Kacyiru suburbs of Kigali, the capital city, revealed his sexuality to a Christian YouTube channel, expecting a backlash.
Although Rwandan laws do not outlaw gay acts, same-sex marriages are not permitted, and most churches preach that homosexuality is a sin.
Despite the challenges, Nabonibo is determined to live openly as a gay man, saying, "In fact, there are many like me even there in churches. The fact is they hide it because of the mentality of church-goers and the community and for their security."
He hopes that his revelation will inspire others to be open about their sexuality, saying, "I feel for others like me who live in fear. They should go out to be heard, because we have to be received like other people out here."
However, Nabonibo has already started to receive abuse since coming out, with some people insulting him and calling him foolish or stupid.
Despite the negativity, Nabonibo remains committed to his faith and music, saying, "I will live with those who accept me and those who reject me – I know it will be a daily battle."
