Former two-time world marathon champion Edna Kiplagat has been named captain of Kenya's marathon team for the upcoming World Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Edna Kiplagat, who narrowly missed a gold medal at the 2017 World Championships in London, will be seeking her third world title when she lines up in Doha.

She will be joined by Visiline Jepkesho, the 2018 Paris Marathon champion, and Ruth Chepng'etich, the 2019 Dubai Marathon champion, in the women's 42-kilometre race.

Geoffrey Kirui, the defending champion, will lead the men's marathon team, which also includes Amos Kipruto, the 2018 Seoul Marathon champion, Paul Lonyangata, the 2018 Paris Marathon champion, and Laban Korir, the 2014 Toronto Marathon champion.

According to Joseph Kiget, the team manager, the selection was made after consultations with stakeholders and coaches. Ernest Ng'eno and Sally Chepyego were dropped from the team.

“After a wide consultation with stakeholders and coaches based on performance, two athletes were dropped, Sally Chepyego and Ernest Ng'eno,” said Kiget.
