On August 28, 2019, Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti revealed that missing Dutch citizen Tob Cohen could have been murdered. This comes as his estranged wife Sarah Wairimu Kamotho remains in police custody.
Ms. Kamotho was arrested at her Kitisuru home on August 28, 2019, and taken to Muthaiga Police Station for further questioning. DCI Kinoti stated that she is the prime suspect in her husband's disappearance and possible murder.
Mr. Cohen, a tours and travel magnate who has lived in Kenya since 1987, went missing between July 19 and July 20, 2019. Employees at his home reported that he was picked up and driven off in a white car on July 20, 2019, while carrying only a briefcase.
Mr. Cohen and Ms. Kamotho were reportedly embroiled in a bitter divorce case, with a multi-million shilling property at the centre of the dispute. He had also filed an assault case against his estranged wife on July 12, 2019, citing continuous harassment and denial of his conjugal rights.
According to court papers filed by Musyoki Mogaka & Co. Advocates on behalf of Mr. Cohen, Ms. Kamotho had previously assaulted him on February 5, 2019, and pushed him down the stairs on February 8, 2019, causing him to seriously injure his forehead.
Ms. Kamotho had also written a note to the Dutch Embassy in Nairobi on July 18, 2019, alleging that Mr. Cohen had depression and a mental condition that was causing problems in their marriage.
Detectives are investigating two letters sent to Mr. Cohen's lawyers on July 20, 2019, purporting to withdraw the assault case as well as the divorce case.
