On August 29, 2019, a multi-agency security team in Mwingi conducted a successful operation along the Mwingi-Garissa highway, resulting in the impoundment of over 10 vehicles and the recovery of contraband goods.

During the operation, a 20-year-old man identified as Abdirahman Abdi was found in possession of Sh3 million in cash while traveling from Mandera to Nairobi.

Mwingi Central OCPD Peter Mutuma explained that a roadblock was erected at Mutwangombe along the busy highway, and both public and private vehicles plying the route were impounded.

The recovered contraband goods included banned bales of polythene bags, boxes of canned fish, rolls of clothing materials, and 100 sacks of charcoal, which were allegedly smuggled into the country from Somalia.

According to OCPD Mutuma, the contraband goods are detrimental to the economy, as they deny the government much-needed revenue.

Those arrested during the operation will be arraigned in court the following day.
