On August 29, 2019, Tanzania's music regulatory board BASATA responded to the directive by Dr Ezekiel Mutua, CEO of the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), to ban the hit song Tetema from being played in public places.
According to BASATA's boss Godfrey Mngereza, the board had vetted the song as per the law before its release and found it suitable for public consumption.
"We have been monitoring songs by artists in the country and have taken action when necessary. However, Tetema does not have any issues. That's why I don't know what criteria were used to restrict its playback during the day," Mngereza said.
Dr Mutua had earlier this week issued the ban on Tetema and another hit song Wamlambez, terming them as pure pornography. As per his directive, the songs will only be played in night clubs and bars where the audience is strictly adult.
