On Wednesday afternoon, a devastating accident occurred at a quarry in Lwala village, Ngodhe Sub Location of Suba North Sub County, Homa Bay County, claiming the life of a 12-year-old pupil.

Doreen Akinyi Oketch, a class three student at Kuge Primary school, was excavating soil from the quarry when a heap of loose soil collapsed, burying her alive.

According to Assistant Chief of Ngodhe Sub Location Charles Ngoe, the minor was caught unaware by the debris and could not escape the tragedy.

Despite the efforts of villagers who rushed to the scene, they were unable to rescue her as the soil had already covered her entire body.

Unfortunately, the villagers were forced to pull out the minor from the soil, but she had already died.

The body has been moved to Kirindo Mortuary awaiting postmortem, and police officers have launched their investigation into the incident.

Assistant Chief Ngoe has appealed to parents in the region to desist from sending their children to the quarry to excavate soil, citing the dangers it poses to the lives of minors.
