On August 29, 2019, a violent attack on enumerators in Loruko, Isiolo County, left two people dead and a female enumerator injured.
According to Peter Lekalkuli, a census supervisor in Loruko sub-location, the attackers ambushed the village at 7:00 pm, killing the two enumerators.
Mr. Lekalkuli stated that the attack occurred just as the enumerator was about to submit her daily work.
Despite the setback, the census exercise will continue, as declared by Mr. Lekalkuli.
Isiolo North Member of Parliament Hassan Odha visited the affected area and claimed that the attackers' motive was to sabotage the exercise, as they only targeted a house occupied by enumerators.
Mr. Odha emphasized the need for more security personnel to be deployed to the area to track down the killers.
Elsewhere, seven people suspected to be members of the Kabonokia Sect were arrested in Tharaka Nithi County for refusing to provide information to census officials.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) stated that the sect members refused to be enumerated, claiming the process was satanic and that they would be counted in Heaven.
The census officials fled for their lives after one of the sect adherents threatened to attack them.
The exercise, which began on August 24, 2019, is set to conclude on August 31, 2019.
