On Wednesday, chaos erupted in Roysambu, Nairobi, as census enumerators took to the streets to demand payment for their work during the ongoing census exercise.
The enumerators, who had assembled at Garden Estate Secondary School on Thika Road, stalled operations of the exercise, citing unpaid allowances.
According to one enumerator, they were promised Ksh. 150 for lunch and another Ksh. 150 for transport per day, but only half of them have received payment for food, transport, and airtime.
He further claimed that they have been forced to conduct the exercise on empty stomachs and are unable to communicate the challenges on the ground due to the lack of airtime.
The enumerators also raised concerns over their security, stating that they were assured of police escorts but none were provided.
