On Wednesday, Harambee Starlets suffered a 3-2 defeat to Malawi in the first leg of their Tokyo 2020 Olympics qualifier in Blantyre.

Despite the loss, Starlets assistant coach Jackline Juma expressed confidence in their chances of advancing to the next stage, citing the team's resilience and determination.

"The referee wasn't fair at all and that affected the morale of the players, but I am happy with how they responded - they never gave up. I was confident even before the match and I am still confident we will win at home and sail through," Juma said after the match.

Kenya's head coach David Ouma was rushed to the hospital during the breather after he slammed a glass door in anger over the referee's decisions.

Malawi took the lead in the 13th minute through Madina Nguluwe's free-kick, which went past Starlets custodian Annete Kundu.

However, Starlets equalised just minutes later through a beautiful free kick from Cynthia Shilwato, who had been fouled outside the box.

Malawi regained the lead just three minutes later, with Temwa Chiwanga dribbling past three defenders to set up her sister Tabitha Chiwanga, who slotted past the advancing Starlets custodian.

Malawi extended their lead to 3-1 courtesy of Tabitha Chiwanga's penalty in the 39th minute, but Starlets kept pushing and were rewarded in the 81st minute, when Samir Amidu's clearance bounced off Elizabeth Wambui into the net.

The two teams will play in the return leg behind closed doors at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos on Sunday.
