Interior Design for Small Spaces and on Your Own Terms ¶
Published on August 29, 2019, by Daisy Okoti
Interior design is often associated with grand, luxurious spaces, but it doesn't have to be that way. With a little creativity and planning, you can create a beautiful and functional living space, even on a tight budget.
Start by understanding your style and what you want your space to feel like. Take a look at your closet and think about the colors, patterns, and textures that you're drawn to. Do you prefer tailored pieces or looser, more comfortable items? Do you gravitate towards certain colors or patterns? These clues can help you determine your style and what you want your space to reflect.
Next, take stock of the space you have to work with. Measure your rooms and think about how you can use furniture and decor to create a sense of flow and functionality. Avoid crowding your space with too much furniture, which can leave little room for anything else. Instead, choose a few key pieces that serve multiple purposes and can help to create a sense of cohesion in your space.
When it comes to choosing furniture, consider the colors and themes you have in mind for your space. You want to make sure that your furniture choices complement your overall design goals, rather than conflicting with them. And don't forget about curtains! Curtains can make a big impact in a small space, but they can also be overwhelming if you're not careful. Choose a big sample, at least two yards, to get a sense of the fabric's magnificence. And consider working with neutral colors like beige, nude, grey, or black, which tend to fade less quickly than bright colors.
Lighting is also an important consideration in small spaces. Choose light fixtures that provide overall brightness, as well as focused light for tasks like reading. And don't forget about the power of mirrors! Place them directly across from windows to help bounce light around the room and create a sense of depth and dimension.
Finally, don't forget about the bathroom! This is often the most trafficked room in the house, so make it count. Add some piquant wallpaper, a pretty peel and stick frame to your mirror, or a fresh coat of paint to the walls. And don't forget about the little details, like a better-looking bathroom rug or a plant to bring in some greenery.
