On August 29, 2019, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua revealed plans to construct nine new stadiums in the county, marking a significant shift from the initial proposal to renovate the existing Kenyatta Stadium.

According to Mutua, the county has allocated Sh800 million for the construction of eight smaller stadiums, each with a seating capacity of 5,000, to be used for youth training. The remaining budget will be used to build a major stadium with a capacity to hold approximately 20,000 people.

The current Kenyatta Stadium, which was opened in November 2013, will undergo minor renovations before the end of the year. The stadium's playing surface will be renovated, and the lighting system and track will be upgraded.

Speaking to Nation Sport, Mutua explained that the decision to construct multiple stadiums was made to avoid potential corruption and to provide more opportunities for the youth in the county. He emphasized that the budget for the project is significantly lower than what other counties have spent on a single stadium.

Construction of the smaller stadiums has already begun, and Mutua aims to break ground on the major stadium within the next two months.
