A 17-year-old with a top KCSE score is unable to enroll at Egerton University due to unmet tuition fees, despite achieving an A (Plain) grade with 81 points out of 84 in the 2020 examination. Kevin Otieno, who ranked among the 0.12% of students securing the coveted grade, faces a Sh47,840 shortfall to begin his Bachelor of Science (Clinical Medicine) program.
Past Struggles and Current Challenges ¶
Despite excelling in subjects including Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology, Otieno’s enrollment has been delayed since September 6, 2021. His mother, Benter Atieno, a single parent working as a tailor and githeri vendor in Kisumu Central, has exhausted all options to raise funds. She reported having only secured Sh5,000 from church contributions after unsuccessful attempts to gather the remaining amount through family, friends, and bursary applications.
Historical Academic Journey ¶
Otieno’s academic journey has been marked by financial obstacles. In 2015, he scored 409 out of 500 in the KCPE exam, later transferring to Lenana School in 2016 but unable to enroll due to fees. A scholarship at Light Academy in Nairobi enabled him to complete secondary education, where he achieved his recent KCSE results.
