On August 28, 2019, Facebook recognized seven Kenyans among 40 young leaders from sub-Saharan Africa for their positive impact in their communities.
The event, dubbed Celebrating Icons of Change, was held in Accra, Ghana, and brought together young leaders, developers, and entrepreneurs who use Facebook as a platform to share ideas promoting social and economic change.
According to Kojo Boakye, Facebook's head of public policy for Africa, the programme aims to give young Africans the opportunity to come together and learn from each other's experiences.
"This event is about celebrating those people, the amazing talent, innovation, and businesses we're seeing emerge, and the young people who are accelerating this growth, and building an incredible future for the continent," said Kezia Anim-Addo, Facebook's communications manager for sub-Saharan Africa.
Among the Kenyans recognized was James Odede, a young community leader who has started a tech hub in Kisumu to teach young people how to code. The facility has so far trained over 50 young people, mostly from high school.
Asha Mweru was also feted for her Facebook Group, Women Work Kenya, which serves as a platform for young women in business and career to share ideas on how to grow their enterprises.
