On August 28, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 7) in Yokohama, Japan.
During their meeting, Mr. Abe announced that Japan would support Kenya's Universal Health Coverage (UHC) program and the development of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Dongo Kundu, Mombasa.
President Kenyatta noted that the number of Japanese companies operating in Kenya had increased significantly over the past three years, from 41 to 57.
Mr. Abe and President Kenyatta also discussed the United Nations (UN) reforms, with President Kenyatta seeking Japan's support for Kenya's bid to win a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
At another event, President Kenyatta and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres discussed regional peace and security in Eastern Africa.
President Kenyatta invited Mr. Guterres to the UN Oceans Conference, which Kenya will co-host with Portugal in Lisbon from June 2 to 6, 2020.
