On August 28, 2019, Harambee Starlets' striker Mwanahalima 'Dogo' Adam expressed confidence in her team's ability to defeat Malawi in an Olympic qualifier in Blantyre, Malawi.
Adam, who scored a brace in a friendly match against Ethiopia two weeks prior, attributed the team's readiness to their intensive training and the confidence they had gained.
"Personally, as the lead striker, I am very ready to score goals; I will not waste any chance that comes my way," Adam said. "As a team in general, we are ready, we had a lot of training, and I have seen confidence in the entire team, which we lacked when we played Ethiopia two weeks ago."
Adam, who also plays for Thika Queens in the Kenyan Women Premier League, urged Kenyans to pray for the team's success, stating that it would be her dream come true to play in the Olympics.
Head coach David Ouma expressed satisfaction with the team's preparations, stating that they had gone to Blantyre solely to secure a win.
Ouma acknowledged that the team had made improvements since their friendly match against Ethiopia, citing increased confidence and a sharper team overall.
"I have assessed them, and I can say they have confidence going to the match. I have sharpened all departments, and I believe at the end of the match, we will have all the bragging rights," Ouma said.
The Kenyan team had a bye in the first round of the qualifiers and would face either Gabon or Ghana in the third round if they defeated Malawi.
Due to the Confederation of Africa Football's (CAF) directive, the second leg match would be played behind closed doors at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
