Kenyan football has gained international recognition with the signing of Harambee Stars defender Joseph Okumu by Swedish top-tier side IF Elfsborg, a club formed in 1904.

Okumu, 22, made a name for himself in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, catching the attention of scouts from the Swedish club. He has already agreed personal terms and is set to be officially unveiled on Wednesday.

Okumu's football journey began at Chemelil Sugar FC in 2014, straight from Kakamega High School. He later joined Free State Stars in South Africa in 2016 and then moved to the USA to join AFC Ann Arbor in 2018.

His impressive performance with AFC Ann Arbor soon led to him being snapped up by Real Monarchs, the reserve team for MLS side Real Salt Lake.

Elfsborg is currently eighth on the log with 27 points from 21 matches.
