On August 28, 2019, Uganda Airlines made its maiden commercial flight to Nairobi, marking the revival of its commercial operations after nearly 18 years.
According to East African Community and Regional Development Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohamed, the entry of Uganda Airlines into the aviation industry is a significant step towards promoting regional trade and integration in Kenya.
"The addition of Uganda Airlines to our regional and country networks demonstrates Uganda's commitment to improving connectivity on the African continent, while creating new opportunities in the region," said CS Mohamed.
He added that the launch of Uganda Airlines in the region would enable citizens of both countries to travel quickly and efficiently, with shorter and direct flights, frequency, and convenience at affordable costs.
Uganda Airlines will initially operate twice daily flights to Nairobi, with plans to expand to Mombasa by mid-September and seven new destinations from Entebbe.
Speaking during the launch, Uganda Minister of Works and Transport Monicah Azuba emphasized the airline's commitment to promoting regional trade and integration.
"I want to encourage the travelling public to book Uganda Airlines and enjoy our faster, convenient, and quality services," said Azuba.
Uganda Airlines CEO Ephraim Bagenda expressed confidence in the airline's ability to compete in the market, citing a team of competent and highly trained multi-nationals who would work tirelessly to make it a success.
"We believe that Uganda Airlines presents another dimension to the travel industry and together with other key stakeholders will propel the aviation sector to greater heights," said Bagenda.
The revival of Uganda Airlines is expected to enhance regional integration between Uganda and Kenya, with both countries demonstrating a long-standing brotherly and extraordinary partnership.
