Published on August 28, 2019, the desire for quality education in Kenya has led to a surge in the establishment of elite schools across the country.
According to Mr. Christopher Khaemba, a former Alliance High School principal and co-founder of Nova Pioneer Schools, congestion and overstretched facilities in public schools are forcing parents to seek alternative learning environments for their children.
"The middle-class is taking their children to private schools, and that is where investors are seeing opportunities. This now calls for public-private partnership in setting up schools," Mr. Khaemba noted.
As a result, Nova Pioneer plans to establish at least 10 primary and secondary schools by 2022, with a focus on expanding to Mombasa after completing two Sh1.5 billion secondary schools in Eldoret.
The institution, which will admit both boys and girls, is expected to admit its first batch of students in January 2020.
Other notable developments in the education sector include the acquisition of Riara Group of Schools by Sweden's Actus Education Holdings and the opening of Crawford International School, a 1,700 capacity institution offering the Cambridge syllabus.
Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Secretary-General Wilson Sossion has expressed concerns over the government's allocation of resources to private schools, stating that private institutions are doing business using children and that the government should channel its resources to public schools.
