Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia have named Mark Harrison as their new head coach, selecting the Englishman over multiple candidates due to his extensive African football experience.
Harrison, 60, arrived last week to replace Portuguese coach Manuel Vaz Pinto, who left the club in July 2021 following a mutual agreement. The former Southampton and Stoke City player has coached 13 African clubs, including South Africa's Chippa United and Golden Arrows, Zimbabwe's Harare City and Highlanders FC, and Botswana's Township Rollers.
K’Ogalo chairman Ambrose Rachier highlighted Harrison's familiarity with African football environments and language capabilities as key selection factors. "We evaluated numerous applicants, but Harrison's proven track record and cultural understanding made him the ideal choice," Rachier stated.
Harrison was present at Camp Toyoyo during Gor Mahia's friendly match against AFC Leopards, a game played after both teams withdrew from a scheduled Premier League fixture at Thika Stadium. Assistant coach Sammy 'Pamzo' Omollo will continue in his role following Vaz Pinto's departure.
The Englishman's playing career spanned eight clubs, including Southampton (1977-1979) and Stoke City (1982-1984). His appointment follows a period of interim management by Omollo after Vaz Pinto's exit.
