On August 26, 2019, American citizen Jason Thomas Dorsey was arrested and detained at Parliament police post in Nairobi after he was caught taking pictures of Kenya's Parliament, a restricted zone.

Two nights later, on August 27, 2019, Dorsey was arraigned before Nairobi Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi, facing charges of assaulting a police officer.

According to court proceedings, Dorsey denied the charges, stating he 'only touched' the officer in self-defense. However, he also alleged that a police officer had mutilated his private parts while in detention.

The Magistrate directed the Central DCIO to investigate Dorsey's sexual assault claim and present a report to the court by August 29, 2019.

Magistrate Andayi also ordered Dorsey to receive medical attention and be transferred to the Central Police Station.

Given the 'seriousness of his alleged crime,' the Magistrate advised Dorsey to find an advocate to represent him, warning that he risks spending five years in jail if found guilty.
