On August 27, 2019, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) conducted an impromptu raid on Sameer Agriculture and Livestock Limited, producers of Daima Milk and other dairy products, at the Sameer Industrial Park in Nairobi.

The company was found to be discharging untreated wastewater into the public Nairobi Sewer, resulting in the pollution of Nairobi River.

According to NEMA, the facility was closed indefinitely due to the environmental violations.

"We have to close down this facility because they are discharging untreated wastewater bypassing the treatment plant," said Ag. Director General Mamo B.Mamo.

The company's Managing Director escaped before NEMA officials arrived, but the Cooperation Manager was not as fortunate.

Speaking to the press, Mr. Mamo emphasized the importance of NEMA's ongoing exercise to ensure that rivers are clean.

"NEMA has identified 102 discharge points along Nairobi River. Out of inspections conducted, 50% of firms have complied. Ongoing inspection is to ensure remaining have complied as per Water Quality Regulation 2006 or be shut & prosecuted," he said.

On the previous day, NEMA carried out a similar spot check in the Industrial Area, Nairobi, resulting in the clampdown of four other companies.
