On August 28, 2019, a court in Eldoret made a ruling that would change the lives of Paul Komen Kirop and his family forever.
Justice Olga Sewe, sitting in Eldoret, allowed an application by Kirop that his wife, Milka Jepkosgei Komen, be presumed dead and a Certificate of Death be issued.
According to Kirop's supporting affidavit, Jepkosgei, a teacher, disappeared without a trace on January 20, 2011, leaving behind a note that read: "Find these documents in your coat."
He found her identity card and an ATM card, which he produced before court, and reported the matter to the police.
The court said that Kirop had demonstrated that all efforts to trace his missing wife had been futile, and therefore, declared her dead.
