Published on August 28, 2019, a police constable in Kisumu County is facing bribery charges after allegedly demanding Sh15,000 from a suspect to drop burglary charges.
According to court testimony, Zakayo Imbugwa was arrested by Constable Augustus Muasa Wambua at Kisumu Law Courts on November 17, 2016, despite having settled a case of stealing 10 bags of millet with his employer, Irene Wanjiku.
Imbugwa had paid Sh20,000 and returned the stolen millet, and the settlement agreement was recorded at Nyalenda Police Post. However, Wambua allegedly demanded Sh15,000 from the suspect to drop the charges, despite the matter having been settled.
Imbugwa testified in a case where Wambua is charged with soliciting the bribe, and the case will be heard on October 8.
