On August 25th, 2019, Jason Thomas Dorsey, an American man, was arrested in Nairobi for allegedly taking photos of parliament buildings, a restricted area.
According to court proceedings, Dorsey claimed that he was sexually assaulted by police while in custody at the Parliament Police Station.
Magistrate Francis Andayi directed the Nairobi Central DCIO to investigate Dorsey's allegations and present a report to the court by August 29th, 2019.
Dorsey was charged with taking photos of a restricted area and assaulting a police officer while performing his duty. He denied the charges, stating that he only touched the officer in self-defense as they were confiscating his headphones.
The magistrate ordered Dorsey to be transferred from the Parliament Police Station to the Central Police Station and to receive medical attention.
Dorsey, who claimed to have run out of cash and be unable to afford a lawyer, asked the magistrate to direct the State to provide him with a lawyer. The magistrate instructed Dorsey to write a formal letter to the State explaining his situation.
