Incidents of census fraud have been reported in parts of the country, with Wajir County being at the center of the controversy.
According to Wajir County Commissioner Lyford Kibaara, the cases of fraud were detected in the Wajir South constituency, where two chiefs and an assistant were arrested for their alleged involvement.
“It is not in the entire county. They were involved in inflating the numbers in their respective sublocations,” Kibaara explained, assuring residents that there will be no more cases of fraud.
The arrests were made on Monday, and the incident sparked a social media campaign that branded the census exercise in Wajir as a fraud, with the hashtag #WajirCensusFraud trending for the better part of the day.
The census exercise is ongoing until August 31, with the government seeking to safeguard its credibility.
