On August 27, 2019, Kenya Film Classification Board chief executive Ezekiel Mutua sparked controversy with a tweet proposing a restriction on two local songs in public places.
According to Dr. Mutua, the songs 'Wamlambez' by Sailors and 'Tetema' by Rayvany and Diamond Platnumz contain sexual innuendos and should only be played in nightclubs and bars, not in public spaces where children are likely to be.
Dr. Mutua's tweet read: 'Both songs are pure pornography. While we may not ban them because they are coded, it is important for the public to know that they are dirty and unsuitable for mixed company. Let them be restricted to clubs, for adults only!'
The proposal sparked both praise and criticism from social media users, with some expressing their views on the suggestion using the hashtag #Wamlambez.
While some users like Charles Mutuku @scripturemonger and Laikipia's Finest @mainamunene_ supported Dr. Mutua's proposal, others like Anne Ndegwa @TrulyAnneNdegwa and Kariuki without a P❌@bervonski criticized it.
